AUGUSTA – The Legislature’s Joint Standing Committee on Taxation voted to advance a bill Wednesday sponsored by Rep. Tiffany Roberts, D-South Berwick, to incentivize businesses to donate to organizations working to address hunger in Maine.

The bill, LD 262, provides a tax credit of up to $5,000 for businesses engaged in commercial fishing, agriculture production and aquaculture production that donate products to food banks, food kitchens and other tax-exempt organizations serving food-insecure individuals in Maine.

“This measure provides support to Maines agriculture and aquaculture producers, who are also feeling the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while offering an additional pathway to meet Maines goal of ending hunger by 2030,” said Roberts. “Both our food producers and community members who are food insecure will benefit from this bill.”

LD 262 faces further votes in the House and Senate.

Roberts is in her second term in the Maine House of Representatives and serves as House chair of the Legislatures Innovation, Development, Economic Advancement and Business Committee. She represents part of North Berwick and South Berwick.
